What is my blog about? I have epilepsy, I have given up alcohol, and I am asking God to fill my cup instead . . .

David Crowder’s Song, “How He Loves” is so true.  God's love is a “jealous love”.  It can be fierce.  It can be violent, like a Tonic Clonic Seizure.  I was putting alcohol first in my life, and God was trying to shake some sense into me.

The good news is that His love can also be ecstatic--the most liberating thing in the world.  We have freedom in Christ: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galations 5:1).  I will not be a slave to alcohol and to my seizures.  I choose to let God take control of my life instead of alcohol.

In this blog, I write about addiction and epilepsy.  To be clear, not all epileptics have an addiction to alcohol, and not all epileptics drink alcohol.  According to the Epilepsy Foundation, “In small amounts, alcohol does not cause seizures. A drink or two now and then does not increase seizure activity.”  It is when an epileptic has three or more drinks in a short period of time that puts him or her at risk for a seizure.  Alcohol withdrawal is also another cause of seizures.  Some studies have shown that chronic drinking has been “linked with the development of epilepsy in some people”.  There may be other factors that may be at work as well, like head injuries, hormones,  and genetics.

Some of my articles address how to deal with pain, stress, and anxiety.  And I also write about hope.  I love that song by Big Daddy Weave, "If I Told You My Story."  The one that begins, "If I told you my story / You would hear Hope that wouldn't let go".  My blog is my story, and if you read it, you will hear Hope, too.

The reason I am telling my story is because I feel very lucky to be alive, and I hear God's voice urging me to write because I know that I am not alone.  There is someone out there who needs to hear this.  If I can help one person by putting my story out there, then it will be worth it.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,  but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14
